Winter is coming...and so is dry skin!

It's the time of year that we are inundated with what you should do to keep your glow all winter long. We are providing you a few tips to navigate naturally through what is all the 'rage' in winter skincare this glorious season.

MAXIMIZE YOUR MOISTURIZER

The Rage: Smooth lotion on damp skin. The trend is to lock moisture in before it disappears from the skin. What is the BEST to get this done!? Beeswax.

Beeswax naturally locks in moisture while adding the antioxidant vitamin E to help protect and repair rough, dry, or chapped skin. The health benefits of beeswax for the skin are almost too many to count. Obviously, one of the best benefits of using beeswax on the skin is the moisturizing and the softening. Unlike the artificial and often petroleum based chemicals added to many moisturizers and skin care lotions to aid in absorption, beeswax contains Vitamin A and provides long-term moisturizing, actually locking moisture into the skin. Unlike petroleum based parabens, beeswax remains biologically “alive” even after it is processed!

Post shower, pat skin dry and apply an oil-based cream or balm instead of a lighter lotion to better trap and lock moisture into skin to fight cold weather dryness.

TRY NEW HYDRATORS

The Rage: Dermatologists are excited about new hydrators. Did you know one of the BEST and not new hydrators is Shea Butter?

To stay hydrated, the skin pulls moisture out of the air—a problem in cold weather, when humidity plummets. This process also slows with age. Shea butter acts as a humectant, which means that it actually attracts new moisture from the air. Shea butter then chemically adheres to this moisture and draws it into the skin where it can replenish the crucial water content that was lost due to dry air, an excessive use of soap, overexposure to the sun or heat, or the aging process.

Shea butter is full of all-natural vitamin A, 100 percent pure, unrefined, raw shea butter aids in numerous skin conditions such as blemishes and wrinkles, stretch mark prevention during pregnancy, muscle fatigue, dermatitis, and radiation treatments for certain medical problems. Shea butter is extremely moisturizing and very hydrating, when applied to the skin, it provides immediate softness and smoothness. So butter up with bodacious balms!

CARE FOR YOUR LIPS

The Rage: Lock in moisture with a thick ointment.
Did you know a natural ointment or balm is the BEST!?

Why are thick ointments and balms being recommended in the winter months for lip care? The corners of the mouth crack when saliva gets trapped there. The digestive enzymes in saliva break down the skin. Using a rich ointment locks moisture in but also protects skin from this type of wear and tear by locking this type of moist residue away from skin.

With this said, not all balms and ointments are created equal. You eat half of the product that you apply to your lips. It is the general suggestion that the cancer causing components in petroleum jellies are removed. However, it is more plausible that petroleum based ointments are an inexpensive way for a formulator to offer the appearance and immediate feel of hydrated skin.

Besides all of the healthy components of elements such as beeswax, natural butters and vegetable oils, It is just better to opt for natural products...and not 'more' natural but actually natural with no fillers. Not only are these types of natural elements 'not' being refined to 'be' safe for you but they already are safe and they already are designed by nature to contain all the elements your skin requires to stay healthy.

Top skin healing ingredients include beeswax, olive oil, shea butter and coconut oil. Remember to use products on your mouth and body that you wouldn't mind putting into your body. An ointment and balm that contains not only these elements but are included in a formula that works on all areas of your skincare needs such as moisturizing, hydrating and locking it all in will ensure luscious lips all winter long.

HUMIDIFY

The Rage: Get the best humidifier.
If your heating system doesn't have a built-in humidifier, place a portable unit in your bedroom to add extra moisture into the air and prevent dry skin and eyes in cold weather and the winter. Here are some humidifier how-to's:

Set the unit for 30 to 50% humidity during the winter months, advises the Consumer Product Safety Commission. (Humidity levels above 60% may allow moisture to build up and condense on surfaces where bacteria can settle and flourish.)

Change water in your humidifier daily and clean out the unit every week to destroy bacteria that can grow in stagnant water. Breathing in dirty mist can cause respiratory problems that are especially dangerous to allergy or asthma sufferers.

Dry Brushing + the Lymphatic System

Two occasions inspired this need to communicate. First, a recent visit to the Korean Family Sauna with the purchase of one Full Body Scrub. Second, a swollen node along my son’s jawline that cleared up with focused massage, along with removing an infected nose piercing! What do these situations have in common you may ask? The lymphatic system. The lymphatic system acts like a sewer system in our body, removing any toxins, waste, and unwanted materials from organs, tissues and cells. It has a role in our immunity, maintaining bodily fluids, absorbing fats in the digestive tract, and detoxifying the body. Lymph nodes are storage sites for cells along the lymphatic system. There are hundreds of these nodes throughout the body. Predominant lymph nodes are in the neck, groin, or axillary regions. The catch is that the lymphatic system has no pump and relies on muscle activity and exercise for the lymph to circulate. Signs of a congested lymphatic system include lethargy, tiredness, hea

Herbal Helpers for the Eclipse Season

Plants are magic. I sit back in awe when, yet another serendipitous event happens to teach me when I do not realize there is a lesson to be had. Once the knowledge is acquired, it is a feeling filled with 'of course this is the way it is.' The eclipse season is heavy upon us, and I do not think we discuss this in our daily lives enough. I put together a list of herbs that may be fabulous helpers for you during this time and beyond, spurred on by a recent experience with Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris). I was putting together my tea for the day and this plant felt like it was hopping up and down in the back of my shelf, like ‘pick me, pick me!’ I had not used Mugwort in quite some time and I thought it was interesting to be called to it. I have focused much of my relationship with plants over the years around scientific study supported by traditional teachings.  Seeking out the study behind what women like my grandmother simply knew to be true, has been my modus operandi.
